COLOR CHANGING TREES

COLOR CHANGING TREES CRAFTS FOR KIDS

I love this arts and crafts activity for kids to teach them about the seasons. It’s a simple and fun way to talk about why the leaves change colors as the atmospheric temperature changes too. Only by using two cups and markers, we can make the leaves go from green to white showing how leaves change until they eventually fall off and regrow new ones the following cycle.

MATERIALS:

  1. 2 white cups

  2. Permanent markers (Brown and Gray/Black)

  3. Markers: Green, Red, Orange, Yellow, Brown/Gray

  4. X-acto Knife

INSTRUCTIONS:

  1. On one of the cups, draw a tree trunk silhouette using the brown permanent marker.

  2. On top of the tree trunk, draw a silhouette of a tree top using the gray/black marker.

  3. Using the x-acto knife, carefully cut out the tree top.

  4. On the second up, use the markers to draw linear slots of color. Gradually, from green to yellow, to orange, to red and brown. Make sure to leave room for a slot with no color after the brown.

  5. Insert the colored cup into the tree silhouette and turn slowly to see the leaves turn color.

Tip: Find reused or recycled cups from home!
