HOMEMADE PLAY DOUGH RECIPE

I have to warn you first, this stuff is addictive to make! Once you make this homemade play dough, there is no going back to store-bought!

This taste-safe play dough recipe is made out of food-grade items, making it safe for the little ones to taste. This does not mean it is edible play dough, just safe if little ones do taste it while playing. Just be sure to always observe your toddlers during play time to be cautious. It is also long-lasting if stored correctly (more details below,) and extremely fun to play with! It is by far one of my absolute favorite sensory recipes to make. Besides being an easy-to-clean-up sensory base, it is also great for kids to develop fine motor skills as they mold, squeeze, and build with the play dough.

This step-by-step play dough recipe goes through each step carefully and explains a few additional tips and tricks to make it come out great! Making playdough is fun! Enjoy the process and ask your little ones to help! Just make sure an adult works with the boiling water step to avoid any burns.

MATERIALS:

Making homemade play dough is such a fun activity for parents and caregivers to do with their little ones. However, it's important to remember that having the right materials and ingredients is key to ensuring that the process goes smoothly and successfully. Without them, you might end up with an unworkable, crumbly dough that won't hold together. One thing to keep in mind is that using the right type of food coloring - for example, gel food coloring instead of liquid food coloring - can make a huge difference in the overall quality and consistency of your dough. So, making sure you have the right materials is important if you want to create an enjoyable and long-lasting activity with your kids.

Here’s what you’ll need:

  1. 1 cup flour

  2. 1/2 cup table salt

  3. 2 tablespoons cream of tartar

  4. 1 tablespoon vegetable oil

  5. 1 cup of boiling water

  6. Food Coloring

INSTRUCTIONS:

Making homemade play dough is not only a fun and easy activity to do with your little ones, but it's also a great way to encourage sensory play and creativity. Here's a step-by-step guide for making the perfect play dough:

  1. Let's start by boiling some water. Get that pot going!

  2. In a separate bowl, it's time to mix the dry ingredients. Combine flour, cream of tartar, and salt and mix well.

  3. Once your dry ingredients are mixed, add in your vegetable oil. This will help keep the dough soft and pliable.

  4. Now it's time to add some color! Add a few drops of food coloring, add it to the boiling water, and mix it all into the bowl. If you want multiple colors, just repeat this step for each color you'd like.

  5. Once you add the food coloring, mix everything very well until it is cool enough to mix with your hands. Trust me, you don't want to burn your fingers on hot dough!

  6. Roll up your sleeves and start massaging the dough with your hands until it's no longer sticky and you get that perfect play dough consistency. If it's still too sticky, just add a bit more flour and keep kneading until it's perfect.

Now you have your homemade play dough ready for hours of fun and creativity! Remember, creativity is key, so let your little ones explore and experiment with different shapes and textures.

Tips: Use the same measuring cup for all the ingredients and tap the cup full of flour so that all the air bubbles come out and you may measure it accurately.

Storage tip: Wait for the play dough to cool off completely. Wrap in plastic and place in an airtight container. Store at room temperature for up to 6 months.
