THE “NO-MELTDOWN” TSA LINE SURVIVAL GUIDE: AIRPORT HACKS FOR TODDLERS

The idea of a vacation sounds great, until you start to envision navigating the airport with your kids. For many parents, this is an anxiety-inducing thought! The long lines, the waiting, the overpriced snacks, making sure everyone stays together… I get it.But it doesn’t have to be. Intentional preparation for each step of the airport process can help your travel day feel like a walk in the park, instead of meltdown central.

We travel a ton with our three kids - our girls have been on countless flights! So I like to think of ourselves as professionals at traveling with kids. 😉 I’ll walk you through some tried-and-true tips that can help you streamline your travel days, and get to your destination with your sanity in tact. From the start of the TSA line to getting on the plane, we’ll talk about what you can do ahead of time to prepare for lots of scenarios.

Getting through the airport isn’t the hard part - it’s standing still. The TSA lines, food lines, and gate boarding are toddler meltdown hotspots. Success isn’t about which activities and snacks you pack, it’s about timing, being able to quickly access what you need, and creating strategic distractions throughout the day.

Pre-Line Prep - Before Security

Set expectations with your kids before you even begin going through the airport. Remind them of the importance of staying together, listening to the rules, and keeping safe. It’ll be a much more fun day if everyone can be committed to the “family team rules!”

We like to dress our kids in matching, bright colored outfits. This way it’s easy to see that all three kids are there at once, and if someone does wander, they are easy to spot in a crowd. I will put AirTags on our luggage and in shoe inserts for the kids, just as an extra layer of precaution. Safety is number one, always.

Before you even walk up to the TSA line, make sure you already have a system in place. One person is the designated passport/ID/boarding pass keeper. Keep them all in their own separate zipper pouch so there’s no rummaging when it comes time to scan at the podium.

Navigating the TSA Belt

With kids, everything can be turned into a game! Talk about feeding your items to the hungry scanner machine. Kids will be excited to take off their shoes and jackets to put on a “plate” and slide into the hungry mouth of the TSA machine! Make sure little ones are wearing slip on shoes and easy on-and-off outer layers to streamline the process for you.

If you’re traveling with your partner or another adult who can help you, it’s time to delegate! One parent is in charge of getting everything in the bins, feeding everything through, removing electronics, etc. The other parent is in charge of the kids - managing, keeping everyone together, making sure everyone is safe.

If you’re traveling alone, definitely utilize a carrier or stroller. Use them up until the last second so you can keep kids safely contained while handling the luggage. If you’re wearing a carrier, you can wear the baby through the security scanner! Just make sure that there aren’t any metal buckles on the carrier, otherwise you’ll have to take it off.

The Instant Distraction Strategy

This is a great time to have a Mothercould Snack Box packed and ready. If there’s a long line for TSA, you don’t want to have to pull out toys and activities, as most are difficult to play with while standing in line. Having a variety of snacks in a fun snack box will keep kids entertained, close to you, and prevent them from getting hangry. You can take a packed snack box through security, just make sure there aren’t any liquidy snacks.

Waiting at the Gate

Sitting at the gate is a fast track to impatience and meltdowns. We don’t like sitting around and waiting, so we can’t expect kids to love it either! We love setting up a “play zone” near the gate so kids have some space to move and play. Pack something thin, like a small sheet, blanket, or even a shower liner to lay down on the floor. (I think we can all agree that airport floors aren’t the cleanest!) This can act as a play zone, naturally containing the toys to one spot. Instruct your kids to keep everything on the blanket.

The best way to pack a variety of activities in a compact, organized way is with the Mothercould Kids Travel Organizer. This is designed for scenarios like this! It features different sized pockets for different activities, and a 360 swivel hook so it can be hung off the back of a chair or an airplane tray table. The fabric is wipeable, the zippers are designed for little hands to be able to use, and kids can help pack their favorite things before the trip. I love that you can see everything at a glance when it’s open.

When it’s time to board, fold up the Mothercould Kids Travel Organizer, gather up the sheet, and you’re ready to go. We like to be some of the last people to board the plane - more time for our kids to get the wiggles out, and less time sitting down! Make sure the activities are close to you on the plane, like under the seat in front of you.

Emergency Troubleshooting

Even if you’ve taken the time to prepare for multiple scenarios, the activities are packed, the snack boxes are full…meltdowns can still happen. Having a few extra ideas in your back pocket to pull out when kids are growing overstimulated or frustrated is a great idea, and helps keep your sanity in check too.

Creating quick, 30-second games can sometimes be enough to give kids a quick reset. For example, “find 4 blue suitcases!” “who can find a dog first?” “let’s sneak up on daddy and tickle him!” Sometimes something as simple as high-fiving the TSA agents can be a great way to redirect kids, and give them something fun to do while waiting.

I like to pack one special, secret snack for when the real meltdown emergency happens. We’ll pull it out if our little ones are having a major meltdown and really need it, and it’s a fun reset to have a special snack break.

Time for Takeoff

Smooth airport travel is all about having predictable systems, accessible items, and keeping things low-stress. Remember that it’s unlikely that things will go perfectly, which is why we do this prep in the first place! Having some easy-to-pack items like the Mothercould Snack Boxes and Mothercould Kids Travel Organizer are great for keeping things organized and easy for your kids to access.

Make your next travel day with kids a parenting win! You’ve got this!
