BISSELL LITTLE GREEN MACHINE REVIEW: IS IT WORTH IT?
Carpet and upholstery cleaning is one of those things you don’t think about until you really need it. A spilled smoothie on the couch, a slime spot on the rug, sticky mystery spots on car seats—it happens. However, those everyday accidents are exactly why I keep the Bissell Little Green Machine handy at all times.
The Bissell Little Green Machine has become one of the most popular portable carpet and upholstery cleaners—and for good reason! I’ve been raving about it for years, telling everyone it should be the number one item on their baby registry. It’s compact, affordable, and promises to handle messes quickly without requiring you to drag out a full-size carpet cleaner.
But if you’ve seen this viral product all over social media lately, you’re probably wondering… Does the Bissell Little Green Machine truly work?
Fortunately, you’re in the right place to figure it out! In this Bissell Little Green Machine Review, I’ll provide my honest breakdown, feelings, and opinions on the product. I’ll tell you what it does well, where it falls short, and whether it’s actually worth investing in. (Spoiler: It is!)
Bissell Little Green Machine Review: Is It Worth It?
I’m no stranger to finding helpful cleaning hacks for those unexpected messes that make you question whether you should repaint the walls and toss out your area rug. (Yes, been there, done that.) From my Mothercould In Your Pocket resource to Instagram videos showing you how to get markers off white walls, I’m all about cleaning smarter—not harder.
I mention that to say: most households don’t need a large, heavy-duty carpet cleaner that inevitably sits in storage. What you really need is a portable carpet cleaner that’s powerful enough to remove stains and small enough to squeeze back into a cabinet or closet.
And that’s exactly what the Bissell Little Green Machine is for. It’s perfect for those in-between moments—quick cleanups, spot-stain emergencies, and keeping things looking fresh without a full deep clean. But ultimately, if you’re deciding whether to click Purchase or Save for Later, you need to know how it works in real life—not in perfectly curated demo videos.
To help set expectations, I’ll tell you exactly what the Bissell Little Green is, what it’s used for, and how it works.
And if you’re looking for more ways to simplify everyday routines like this, that’s exactly what I share in my book, Playful by Design. I outline practical, realistic systems that help make life feel a little more manageable. And the best part? You don’t need more. In fact, this book is all about doing more with less. What Is Bissell Little Green Machine?
The Bissell Little Green Machine is a portable wet-dry carpet and upholstery cleaner designed to seamlessly erase spots, stains, and spills. It’s lightweight, easy to carry around, and doesn’t take up much space. All of these factors are a big win for small, targeted messes and parents who prefer bulk-free appliances.
And the most exciting part of all? You don’t need 100 different cleaning solutions, 10 different towels, and endless elbow grease. The Bissell Little Green is scientifically proven to lift and remove 100+ common messes, using water, a cleaning solution, and suction. That means you’re not just wiping up messes, pushing them further into the fabric—the machine actually pulls the stain up and out. Hence why it’s so popular for things like couches, car seats, auto interiors, rugs, and carpets!
What Is the Bissell Little Green Used For?
As a parent, you know exactly how often little hands can make big messes. And those messes aren’t isolated to one place, material, or size! This makes having a versatile carpet and upholstery cleaning essential, especially one that can clean up things such as:
Pet stains on carpets and rugs
Upholstery cleaning, like couches, chairs, and ottomans
Car interiors, including seats and floor mats
Spot stain cleanup in high-traffic areas
It’s not meant for cleaning the entire room—that’s what my Cleaning Favorites List is for! It is, however, fantastic for targeted messes… which is exactly what most of us need. And if you want a few extra tips, check out my post on how to remove stains from carpets. (You can never have too many helpful hacks, right?)
How Does the Bissell Little Green Machine Work?
Water and Cleaning Solution Application
The machine sprays a mix of water and Bissell formula, the brand’s specialized cleaning solution, directly onto the stain. This helps break down whatever is sitting in the fabric, whether it’s dirt, food, or something a little more stubborn. (Looking at you, slime!) Make sure to look into the top two cleaning solutions: Bissell Little Green Spot & Stain Cleaning Solution, and Bissell Deep Clean Pro, and figure out which works best for your home!
Speaking of, if you are dealing with slime stains, I have all kinds of resources to help you out. Read over “How to Get Slime Out of Clothes,” “How to Get Slime Out of Bed Sheets,” and “How to Get Slime Out of a Blanket.”
Built-In Scrubbing Brush
The Bissell Little Green Machine comes with a “Tough Stain Tool,” a durable attachment with stiff bristles and a 3-inch to 6-inch-wide nozzle. With this, you can gently scrub the area until the stain begins to lift. Don’t feel like you have to go overboard here! You want to scrub just enough to loosen the stain without damaging the material.
Strong Suction Power
Technically, you can suction and scrub with the Bissell Little Green Machine at the same time. However, after loosening the stain, the machine efficiently uses suction to pull the dirty water back out. And honestly, this is what makes the machine so satisfying to use! You can actually see how much dirt and grime you cleaned up after you dump the tank. In other words, you don’t have to stress about any leftover mess sitting in your fibers for later.
Dual Tank System
Bissell Little Green Machine’s dual-tank system is what sets it apart from so many other portable carpet and upholstery cleaners. This 2-in-1 design separates clean and dirty water, ensuring you don’t reapply the stain to your fabric. clean water and the solution from dirty water, ensuring If you’ve ever used a carpet upholstery cleaner that doesn’t have this system in place? You know just how important this feature is!
Pros of Bissell Little Green Machine
Compact and Easy to Store
One of the biggest advantages of the Bissell Little Green Machine is its compact size. You don’t have to shove it into your outdoor shed or rearrange your storage closet—just simply tuck it away into a closet, cabinet, or under a sink!
Here’s the thing: when you have to search for or lug out a cleaning product? It makes cleaning ten times more difficult. And it’s the reason you’ll often opt for DIY hacks, which, while they’re helpful, don’t always clean up tougher stains. The Bissell Little Green Machine is one of those tools you can keep accessible, encouraging you to truly use it.
Affordable Compared to Larger Machines
Spending money, especially on cleaning products, is one of those adult responsibilities that doesn’t always feel exciting. But if we have to do it, we’d rather do it on something actually worth the investment, right? That’s the Bissell Little Green Machine.
If you’ve ever looked at the prices of full-size carpet cleaners, you know they get expensive—fast. The Green Machine is a more budget-friendly option that gets the job done for those everyday messes. Plus, if you get it from Amazon? You can often snag an even better deal!
Effective on Small Stains and Upholstery
When you have kids, you quickly realize how unaware you were of just how many types of stains could exist. Slimes, snacks, smoothies, spit-up, arts and crafts, grass, mud—I can go on forever. Needless to say, having a genuinely effective spot stain cleaner can make all the difference.
Ideally, you’ll want to use it as soon as a stain happens; this gives you the best chance to fully remove it. However, if you come across an old stain, don’t lose hope just yet! You can pre-treat the area for effective removal—which I’ll cover below.
Easy to Set Up and Use
Personally, I can confidently say that difficult set-up instructions are like a cleaning machine deterrent. And I’m sure plenty of you feel the same! The more confusing a machine is, the less practical it becomes. And fortunately, for the Bissell Little Green Machine, setup is the furthest thing from complicated.
Fill the tank, plug it in (or don’t, if you have the cordless version!), and you’re ready to go. That’s it—it truly is that easy. It’s incredibly straightforward, making it ideal for quick, last-minute cleanups.
Cons of Bissell Little Green Machine
As much as I love this versatile little machine, reviews are all about honesty and transparency. Here are a handful of cons important to know before investing in this product:
Small Water Tank Requires Frequent Refilling
For spot cleaning? The Green Machine is amazing. But because the product is so compact, its 16-ounce (or, in some models, 48-ounce) tank doesn’t hold much water. If you’re cleaning multiple spots—or cleaning a larger, tougher stain—you’ll probably need to refill it at least once. But if it’s of any reassurance, this is considered common for a machine this size!
Not Ideal for Large Areas
The Bissell Little Green Machine isn’t ideal for cleaning larger areas, but that’s not what it’s designed for! If you’re looking to deep clean entire area rugs, large sections of carpet, or all of your car interiors, I’d recommend a larger, full-size upholstery cleaner. The Green Machine is best for small, targeted messes.
Can Leave Surfaces Damp If Overused
For tough stains, you may feel like you have to use a bunch of water or go over the stain multiple times. And sometimes, you definitely do! However, this can oversaturate the area, leaving the fabric damp for longer. Letting it air-dry and breaking up cleaning sessions can help a lot here!
Hose Length May Feel Limiting
Depending on what and where you’re cleaning, the hose may feel a little too short. With a length of 4 to 4.5 feet, it’s manageable, but not the most flexible if you’re trying to reach awkward areas. While this may feel limiting, the hose was made to be short to ensure high suction power!
Is the Bissell Little Green Machine Worth It?
The Bissell Little Green Machine is absolutely worth it for parents who need a convenient, affordable way to handle small stains and upholstery cleaning. I’ve used this product for years, for everything from carpet messes to couch stains, and I can’t recommend it enough. It’s especially helpful if you have kids, pets, and spend a lot of time in your car, because car seats can somehow collect everything.
That said, I wouldn’t recommend it as a replacement for a full-size carpet cleaner. It’s more of a maintenance tool—something you grab for last-minute messes and targeted spot stains! But here’s the thing: if you use your Green Machine consistently, you won’t need a full-size carpet cleaner. You catch stains when they happen, before they have time to set in, spread, or turn into a full-day cleaning project.
How to Use Bissell Little Green Machine
Now that you know the pros, cons, and common uses, are you ready to learn how to use it? Here’s a quick step-by-step guide so you know what to expect when your Bissell Little Green Machine shows up:
Pre-Clean the Area If Needed
If you’re treating an area with dirt or debris, make sure to vacuum it first to avoid clogging the attachment! You can do this with a simple full-size dry vacuum or, if the area is small enough, a dry handheld vacuum. And for tougher stains? Make sure to use Bissell Tough Oxy Stain Pretreat Formula or Miss Mouth’s Messy Eater Stain Treater. Both products are fantastic, and pre-treating can make a big difference.
Fill Clean Water Tank with Solution
After you’ve cleaned up any debris, remove the water tank from the machine by lifting it straight up. Next, fill the tank with the recommended cleaning solution and add warm water to the fill line. Now put the cap back on, slide it back into the machine, and make sure it’s seated properly.
Spray and Scrub Using the Attachment
My top tip? Hold the tool a few inches above the spot and press the “spray” trigger. Make sure you’ve thoroughly sprayed the stain! Then, let it sit for a few minutes to fully soak into the fabric. This can make a huge difference, especially for harder-to-treat stains.
Now, use the scrubbing attachment to gently scrub the stain. Don’t feel like you have to press too hard; you just want to scrub enough to loosen things.
Extract Dirty Water with Suction
After scrubbing, use the Tough Stain Tool to suction up the dirty water. This is the most satisfying part—you can see the stain as the machine sucks it up! Just move the tool back and forth towards you to fully suction the rest of the stain up.
Repeat If Necessary
If you feel you didn’t fully remove the stain, let the fabric dry, then go in for a second round! Don’t feel like this is a result of the machine not working. Sometimes, especially for tougher stains, this is completely normal—and necessary! If you want to speed up the process, place a fan over the fabric or, if possible, move it closer to an open window.
The Bissell Little Green Machine is the BEST portable carpet and upholstery cleaner for small, targeted messes.
Messes are a natural part of everyday life—there’s no escaping them. And honestly, you shouldn’t feel like you have to!
